Five of Matthew McConaugheys Worst Movie Roles

The Lincoln Lawyer - Berlin Photocall

If you watched Matthew McConaughey in the roles in his early career, it would have been really easy to write him off as someone with little to offer cinematically in the way of depth. But if you checked out some of the more recent work in his career (such as True Detective and Dallas Buyer’s Club) you would see, he may go down as one of the greats one day.  But let us not forget some of his earlier work.  We thought we would remind you of Matthew McConaughey’s five worst movie roles. As the man himself would say: alright, alright, alright. Well, maybe not in this case.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation

2014 Winter TCA Tour - Day 1

Never forget that the first time most of us ever saw Matthew McConaughey was in this Texas Chainsaw movie. He jumped around, frothing and acting crazy, giving us no hint at all at just what he was capable of. Honestly, he chews so much scenery in this movie, it is shocking he ever got taken seriously as a actor as a result of it. Also memorable for launching the career of Renee Zellweger.

Surfer, Dude

Film Imdependent's 2011 Los Angeles Film Festival Opening Night Premiere "Bernie" - Red Carpet

A movie that kind of sums up McConaughey’s earlier ideal of never wearing a shirt and always surfing and hanging with your bros. Not even sure if this is a movie or this is just some camera men following him for a few weeks.  Noteworthy because he starred in it with real life “bro” and future True Detective star, Woody Harrelson.

How To Lose A Guy in Ten Days

Mission Hills Star Trophy - Day 3

This Kate Hudson co-starring flick set the tone for a slew of romance movies Matthew McConaughey made in the 90’s and early 2000’s.  However the move as flat, dull, but good enough to springboard him into where he is now, I suppose.

Angels in the Outfield

86th Annual Academy Awards - Backstage

Yes, we all loved this Disney flick when we saw it is a kid. This may have been Matthew super early on in his career, but I bet most of you don’t even remember he was in this. That is how you know a movie (or performance) isn’t all that great. Your brain makes you forget it. But at least Christopher Lloyd was in it.

Fool’s Gold

"The Paperboy" Photocall - 65th Annual Cannes Film Festival

Another “let me flirt with someone on a beach for 90 minutes” movie that Matthew McConaughey seemed to love making so much at one point. Now we get Rust Cohle. But never forget, this was the Matthew we had to deal with before to get to where he is now, which is A-list status.
